After a detailed examination, periodontal charting and x-rays, scaling and root planing may be recommended to treat periodontal disease. The objective is to clean areas that are otherwise inaccessible with regular brushing and flossing. The pockets are often too deep to effectively access during a normal dental cleaning, and they may worsen if not addressed. The goal is to return the pockets to a healthy level that can be then cleaned routinely with brushing, flossing and regular prophylaxis in the dental office.

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure there is no discomfort. An ultrasonic scaler is used to remove plaque, bacteria and tartar from the root surfaces, and hand instruments are used to clean all of the deep pockets. A quadrant usually takes about 45 minutes to be done thoroughly, and 2 quadrants can be done per visit. Polishing and smoothing of the teeth is performed to remove any stains and improve the appearance. We also provide detailed instruction on oral hygiene and make individualized home care recommendations.
